Upcoming Events
Season Opening - November 7. 2009
Each month, the gallery holds a reception/exhibition for the public. Upcoming receptions are:
Artist Reception/Jerry Churchill - January 18, 2009 - 5:30pm to 7:30pm Jerry's Creations
Jerry Churchill still remembers making a papier-mache bowl in the fourth grade in Lima, Ohio. His passsion for sculpting was able to evolve when he retired in 1996. He has attended numerous workshops, primarily Haystack and Anderson Ranch in Colorado, and works with wire, clay, stone, metal, and papier-mache. No matter what the medium, it is about playing with the shape. He works by looking with his eyes and hands, and determines how the object may be changed to enhance the relationship between the various areas of the same piece.
Artist Reception/Evan Charney - February 15, 2009 - 5:30pm to 7:30pm.
Evan’s prints are in many private collections and have been selected for juried exhibitions in Rochester, New York; Baltimore, Maryland; Worcester, Falmouth and Provincetown, Massachusetts; and Sanibel and Ft. Meyers, Florida. Evan comments: "For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with printmaking. It’s a perverse art form: as much craft as art. It requires more time and patience to gain control over technique than does painting, like a musician who must painstakingly master the instrument before being able to make beautiful music. Unlike painting, the outcome in printmaking is indirect, hidden, the result uncertain until proved. But then there is nothing as satisfying as "pulling" the final print, the "Aha!" moment when you lift the paper from the press and get to view the final result". Artist Reception/Ellie Harries - April 12, 2009 - 5:30pm to 7:30pm
Eleanor Harries has lived and worked on Sanibel for about twelve years. Her art education began years ago with a museum course in oil painting. Fascinated, she continued to study and work with a variety of media over many years, and in a number of locales. Her education culminated with intensive courses in realistic painting at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. She works mainly in oils and pastels. With a deep appreciation of Sanibel as a nature sanctuary, the natural world has become the subject of her painting. Influencing the art has been the fascinating stories of how native vegetation has been used by many cultures in the past and present. The link between these stories and their expression as art, continues to be her personal challenge. She has created a series of very colorful oil collages illustrating a variety of native plants which have been used for healing purposes Host plants and their butterflies are included. Marveling at the beauty of some small native flowers, she painted a series of single blossoms. With her painting titled, Gumbo Limbo, she has moved away from a focus on the tree itself, and has created an imaginary composite depicting cultural uses of the tree. She continues to experiment. The exhibit at Hirdie-Girdie Art Gallery will be a sampling of local environmental paintings, all of which are full of color. Eleanor Harries' album.
